In this diverse and
evolving global society, the mission of Bellingham High School is to provide
a
supportive
and challenging environment which fosters confident, successful and active life-long
learners who contribute positively and responsibly to their community.
The English Department of Bellingham High School believes that as
lifelong learners, writing, thinking, and reading are essential variables. The
mandatory summer reading list contains selections for each grade level that
cover a myriad of themes. This reading requirement will be assessed in September.
Even though we are on summer recess, we strongly encourage our
students to invest time to read for interest, for enjoyment, and for enrichment
beyond the scope of this listing.
Make your book choices by selecting
a book from the list of the grade you will be in when school
begins. A student entering a specific grade level is to select summer reading(s)
according to:
Level
II (Standard): read ONE selection
Level III (Honors): read TWO selections – one from the list and
one that is specifically assigned
to them.
AP: requirements are listed separately.
Every effort has been made to
select books which will appeal to a broad spectrum of students; the teachers and
the school librarian chose books of different genres and reading levels.
This year the reading lists can be found online (see links below); additionally,
there are brief descriptions of the books, number of pages and information on
availability of books that are on CD, eBook, digital, etc. If you are
interested in an audio title you must request it from the public library; it
could take time to get the book so please submit your request early.
The assessment assignment is also
online and is the same for all grades, all titles. It must be signed by a
parent/guardian before it is turned in.
