2009 Summer Reading List

6th Grade

All students are required to read two books this summer.  The book *Crash by Jerry Spinnelli is required for all students.  The second book is to be chosen from the following selections.  Audio books may be requested through the public library; please allow a week or two for the books to be delivered.  Printable List - Word

** Behind the Bedroom Wall - Laura E. Williams.  Thirteen-year-old Korinna must decide whether to report her parents to her Hitler youth group when she discovers that they are hiding Jews in a secret space behind Korinna's bedroom wall. 
 

 

 

Book of Three, The - Llyod Alexander.  Taran, Assistant Pig-Keeper to a famous oracular sow, sets out on a hazardous mission to save Prydain from the forces of evil.  Audio

*Crash - Jerry Spinelli.  Seventh-grader John "Crash" Coogan has always been comfortable with his tough, aggressive behavior, until his relationship with an unusual Quaker boy and his grandfather's stroke make him consider the meaning of friendship and the importance of family.  Audio

 

 

Devil's Arithmetic, The - Jane Yolen.  Holocaust. Hannah resents the traditions of her Jewish heritage until time travel places her in the middle of a small Jewish village in Nazi-occupied Poland.  Audio

 

 

Egypt Game - Zilpha Keatley Snyder.   A group of children, entranced with the study of Egypt, play their own Egypt game, are visited by a secret oracle, become involved in a murder, and befriend the Professor before they move on to new interests, such as Gypsies.  Audio

 

 

Foxman, The - Gary Paulsen.  A town boy sent to live on a remote wilderness farm forms a friendship with an elderly, disfigured man who teaches him many things.  Audio





Freak the Mighty - Rodman Philbrick.
 
At the beginning of eighth grade, learning disabled Max and his new friend Freak, whose birth defect has affected his body but not his brilliant mind, find that when they combine forces they make a powerful team.  Audio

 

 

Redwall - Brain Jacques.  When the peaceful life of ancient Redwall Abbey is shattered by the arrival of the evil rat Cluny and his villainous hordes, Matthias, a young mouse, determines to find the legendary sword of Martin the Warrior which, he is convinced, will help Redwall's inhabitants destroy the enemy.  Audio

Series of Unfortunate Events - Lemony Snicket The series is about the adventures of three children, the Baudelaire orphans, after the death of their parents in a fire.  Students may choose a title from books 4 - 11.

 

 

**Slave Dancer - Paula Fox  Kidnapped by the crew of an Africa-bound ship, a thirteen-year-old boy discovers to his horror that he is on a slaver and his job is to play music for the exercise periods of the human cargo.  Audio

 

 

Someone is Hiding on Alcatraz Island - Eve Bunting.  When he offends the toughest gang in his San Francisco school, Danny tries to elude them by going to Alcatraz only to find himself and a Park Service employee trapped by the gang in an old prison cell block.

 

 

Something Upstairs - Avi. When he moves from Los Angeles to Providence, Rhode Island, Kenny discovers that his new house is haunted by the spirit of a black slave boy who asks Kenny to return with him to the early nineteenth century and prevent his murder by slave traders.  Audio
